Dr Michelle Barker has extensive expertise in open science, digital workforce capability and digital research infrastructure. She is co-convening Vive la difference in April 2022, a Lorentz Center workshop considering how research software engineering could be reframed to place diversity, equity and inclusion as a central organising principle in research software. She recently chaired the OECD Expert Group on digital skills for the research sector and was both a consultant and participant for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) working group on digital skills. As a sociologist, Michelle is passionate about building collaborative partnerships to achieve system change. She works as both as an Open Science Consultant, and Director of the Research Software Alliance, which brings together software communities together to collaborate to increase recognition of research software. She is a former co-chair of the Research Data Alliance Organisational Advisory Board and a former Director of the Australian Research Data Commons, where she led the strategic planning for the Australian government’s $180 million in digital research infrastructure, including national digital skills and training approaches.
