Václav Hapla
Biography
Vaclav is interested in applied mathematics, HPC, scientific computing and programming in general. He earned a PhD degree at the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic, in the field of Computational and Applied Mathematics in 2016. During his PhD studies and for a year of his post-doctoral phase, he was working at the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center on the VSB-TUO campus as a scientific programmer. He dealt with various topics within parallel algorithms, matrix algorithms, applied linear algebra, finite element methods, domain decomposition methods, graph algorithms, and mathematical optimization, particularly quadratic programming. He co-founded the open-source PERMON toolbox [http://permon.vsb.cz/], based on the open-source Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) [https://petsc.org/].

In 2017, Vaclav started a postdoc position at the Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich. There he has been dealing with extending the distributed mesh infrastructure and parallel I/O capabilities in the PETSc DMPlex module. This infrastructure is now used by the Mondaic Salvus full-waveform inversion and modelling package [https://mondaic.com/product/], the Firedrake Project [https://www.firedrakeproject.org/] and other scientific projects around the globe. More recently, Vaclav started to contribute to the Inversionson package for automatic Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) workflows [https://github.com/solvithrastar/inversionson].
